Are you Travel-Ready? Tips for a Healthy Trip

Winter doldrums are setting in and vacations are on everyone’s mind. I’m sure the LAST thing on your mind is infectious disease and illness that can occur as you travel around the Globe. Cultural, hygienic, and geopolitical differences can pose challenges while bounding abroad; therefore, it is important to take precautionary measures before you depart.

You’ve booked your vacation and you’re already daydreaming at your desk. You’re next step should be to contact a physician. He/she can help you decide the best medical preparations to take based on your itinerary and medical history. The physician can advise you on any known risks associated with your destination, food and beverages to avoid, necessary pre-travel vaccinations, how to access medical care if you should need it, and any needed post-travel follow-up.

When packing for your trip, it is also a good idea to bring along a small first aid kit with basic needs such as bandages, ibuprofen, and anti-diarrhea medicine. The physician can suggest items to include based on your destination and personal medical history. You should also carry a note in your purse or wallet indicating any health conditions, prescriptions you take, and emergency contact information. Taking these precautions in advance will help make your trip a happy and healthy one.
